Family-oriented from the start
Hello, my name is David Diaz, founder of Homeva. I’m originally from Bogota, Colombia. I worked at Apple for 5.5 years. I started as a specialist selling iPhone cases. Over time I worked myself through corporate, working for managers close to Steve Jobs/Tim Cook in business development. This is where I learned about business and developed a deeper love for technology and design.
After leaving Apple, I wanted to do something where I could have a bigger impact on people. During this same time, I had started a family and moved into a new home with my wife and our 6-month-old baby. As a new dad, I was concerned about our new home’s security. But I also wanted to make our lives easier.
Because of this, the light bulb went off! I began testing all the latest devices that were coming out on the market. Many smart home products did not work very well. I concentrated on only working with devices that were reliable, easy to use, and integrated well together.
My first smart home project
The first smart home system I designed was to help make my son’s nighttime feeding routine easier. When my son would start crying in the middle of the night, all I had to do was open my door. A sensor would trigger the lights between our bedroom and the kitchen to turn on at 20%. This gave me enough light to warm up my son’s milk and put him back to sleep without disturbing my wife. Then, a sensor would trigger all the lights off after 5 minutes when I returned to bed.
From this, I realized the potential that I could use systems like this to improve people’s daily lives and change the way they interact with their homes while helping people feel safer. That was a game-changer! A few months later, Homeva was born.
